Ask the Dentist: Holiday Eating Tips to Keep Your Smile Healthy

By Joseph Brier, DMD, FAGD, Dental Care of Lucas

The holiday season brings plenty of reasons to smile: family gatherings, cozy traditions, and of course, an abundance of delicious treats. From candy canes and cookies to festive drinks and rich desserts, it’s a time of year when sweets are everywhere. While it’s perfectly fine to enjoy your seasonal favorites, many holiday treats can be rough on your teeth if you’re not careful. The good news is that a few simple habits can help you savor the celebrations while still keeping your smile healthy.

One smart strategy is to choose your sweets wisely. Not all treats affect your teeth in the same way. Candy canes, toffees, caramels, and other sticky sweets tend to cling to the grooves of your teeth, giving cavity-causing bacteria more time to feed on the sugar. They also tug on dental restorations like fillings, crowns, and bridges more, increasing the likelihood of dislodging a restoration and having a dental emergency. Hard candies also dissolve slowly, which means sugar lingers in your mouth longer. In contrast, chocolate melts quickly and rinses away more easily, making it a gentler option for your enamel. When possible, enjoying your sweets alongside a meal rather than continuously snacking helps minimize the amount of time your teeth are exposed to sugar.

Another key habit is staying well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps rinse away food particles and neutralize acids produced by bacteria. Water also helps maintain saliva flow, which is one of the body’s natural defenses against tooth decay. Pair your holiday meals or sweet treats with a glass of water to give your enamel a little extra protection. If you enjoy sparkling beverages, remember that carbonation can make drinks more acidic, so alternating with still water is a helpful balance.

During the holidays, routines often change – travel, parties, and late nights can make it tempting to skip a brushing session here and there. But maintaining your usual brushing and flossing routine, even on the busiest days, goes a long way toward keeping your teeth healthy. If brushing right after eating isn’t convenient, a quick rinse with water or chewing sugar-free gum can help until you get home. Consider carrying a small travel toothbrush if you’re attending back-to-back gatherings.

With a little mindfulness and a few helpful habits, you can fully enjoy the flavors and fun of the season without compromising your dental health. By choosing treats thoughtfully, staying hydrated, and keeping up with your daily oral care, your smile will stay bright and healthy and your teeth will thank you long after the holidays are over!
