As summer winds down and kids head back to school, most parents are focused on new backpacks, school supplies, and adjusting bedtime routines. But there’s one more important thing to add to your to-do list: making sure your child starts the year with a healthy smile. Good oral health can boost your child’s confidence, comfort, and even their ability to focus in class. Here’s your back-to-school dental checklist.
Just like an annual physical, a dental exam is essential for detecting problems early—before they cause pain or missed school days. Your dentist can check for cavities, gum health, and bite alignment, as well as discuss any concerns about your child’s teeth.
Even with good brushing at home, plaque can build up in hard-to-reach spots. A professional cleaning helps prevent cavities, freshens breath, and leaves your child’s teeth feeling smooth and clean.
Back-to-school often means busy mornings and late evenings—prime times for brushing shortcuts. Make sure your child brushes for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flosses once a day. For younger kids, supervision or assistance may still be needed.
Limit sugary snacks and drinks, which can fuel cavity-causing bacteria. Instead, choose water, cheese, nuts, fresh fruits, and crunchy vegetables to help clean teeth naturally.
Sealants are thin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They help protect against cavities, especially in kids who are still mastering brushing technique. Ask your dentist if your child is a good candidate.
If your child plays contact sports—or even activities like gymnastics or skateboarding—a custom mouthguard can help prevent chipped or knocked-out teeth. Make sure last year’s still fits properly.
If your child’s dentist or orthodontist has recommended treatment, starting early can sometimes shorten the overall process and prevent more serious issues down the road.
Bottom line: A little preparation now can help your child avoid toothaches, missed school days, and costly dental problems later. Starting the school year with a healthy mouth is one of the best ways to set them up for success—both in and out of the classroom.
If it’s been more than six months since your child’s last visit, now’s the time to schedule their back-to-school dental checkup.
