Summer Smile Tips: Pool Chlorine, Sports, and Staying Hydrated

By: Dr. Joseph Brier and the team at Dental Care of Lucas

Summer's all about sunshine, swimming, and staying active—but did you know some of your favorite warm-weather habits can sneakily affect your teeth? Don't worry—we’re not here to ruin the fun, just to help your smile stay strong through the season. Here are three quick things to keep in mind:

Pool Time and Chlorine

Spending lots of time in the pool? Great for your body—less so for your teeth if you’re not careful. Pool water that’s too chlorinated can wear down enamel over time, especially if you’re swimming several days a week. You might notice a weird yellow or brown tint on your teeth—that’s from the water, not your brushing.

Tip: Don’t panic—you don’t need to quit the pool. Just try to keep your mouth closed while swimming, rinse your mouth with fresh water after a swim, and don’t skip brushing before bed.

Sports = Smile Risk

Whether it’s rec soccer, weekend softball, or just some driveway basketball, summer sports are prime time for chipped or knocked-out teeth (yes, even in adults). We see a surprising number of “oops” moments from weekend warriors every year.

Tip: If you're playing anything with speed, contact, or flying objects, consider a mouthguard. You can grab one at the store or have one made custom—either way, it’s way cheaper than an emergency dental visit.

Hydration Is a Dental Thing, Too

It’s no secret staying hydrated is key in the summer heat—but it also helps your mouth stay healthy. When you’re dehydrated, your saliva dries up, and that means more bacteria can stick to your teeth and gums. Plus, sipping on sodas or sports drinks all day just adds sugar and acid into the mix.

Tip: Stick with water as much as you can, especially between meals. Your teeth—and your whole body—will thank you.

A few simple habits can keep your summer smile bright and worry-free. Questions or concerns? We’re happy to help—whether you’re due for a checkup or just want to know if your child’s mouthguard still fits. Stay cool out there.
